Wire, covering by winding. - A machine for covering wire with silk &c., of the type comprising flyers rotating on an horizontal or substantially horizontal axis, is arranged with a series of pairs of spinner heads t one in advance of the other, each pair being provided with a separate drive from the main shaft b, comprising a cord x, a pulley f on the shaft b, pulleys y on the spinner heads, and guide-pulleys w. Spare bobbins of covering-material are placed on holders 8, 10 in front of each spinner head. The wire is led from a spool 14 on a support 13, through the spinner heads t and bobbin holders 8, 10, and out over a guide-pulley 10, once round a grooved wheel m, and through a traversing-guide 18 to a winding-bobbin 6. The bobbins 6 are separately driven by cords 7 passing over guide-pulleys 4, 5 and the corresponding grooved wheels n, which are on a countershaft c driven from the main shaft b. Means are provided for varying the relative speeds of the flyers and the winding-bobbins, and comprise a train of change-speed gears on an arm movable radially about the main shaft b and a belt drive between a pulley on the countershaft c and an interchangeable pulley on the shaft of the last gear in the train, the arm being adjusted radially to compensate for slackening of the belt when the pulley is changed. The traversing-guides 18 are mounted on a rod 29 reciprocated by a crank mechanism operated by worm gear from the countershaft c.
