131,033. Arnold, H. March 28, 1918. Maps.-An apparatus for use in making relief maps and plans comprises a base p having graduated corner pillars m. The pillars may be of angle-iron or cylindrical, and support thereon by means of clamping-screws v or rotatable nuts bars r which support a frame a on which is placed the contoured plan which is to be represented in relief. A relief map is then built up on a plate p1 placed on the base, a flat surface of plastic material being first formed corresponding to the lowest contour level, and the level of the next contour traced thereon. Plastic material is placed within the area defined by this contour and smoothed off at a level given by the height of the next contour by means of a straight-edge, and the process continued till the completion of the map. The steps between the contours are filled in with plastic material and smoothed off obliquely.
