Overhead travellers and transporters. - The hoisting and traversing drums A, B of a transporter or crane are connected through a clutch C, which is automatically put in or out of gear according as the traversing or hoisting controllers or valves are put in the " on " position. Self-sustaining brakes E, F are also automatically brought into and out of action. Thus, for hoisting, the clutch C is disengaged, the brake F is released, and only the hoisting drum A is driven; for traversing, the clutch C is engaged, the brakes E, F are released, and both drums are driven, the load being traversed horizontally. In electricallyoperated cranes the clutch and brakes are applied by springs or weights and are released by solenoids energized by the hoisting and traversing controllers. The release is effected in other power systems by power-operated pistons controlled by the hoisting and traversing valves or levers. The traversing rope may be endless so as to act positively in both directions of traverse, or it may be single, the load hook being weighted to cause the load line to traverse the load in one direction.
