Bales, treating.-A device for bringing together and holding the edges of bales, which have been cut open for inspection, in order that the edges may be re-sewn, comprises lower and upper toothed jaws 1, 6, to which are attached straight and hook-shaped ratchet-bars 3, 5 respectively. A lever 8, connected to the bar 5 by links 9, carries a pin 11 which is adapted to engage the ratchet-teeth 4 of the bar 3. A pawl in the form of a pin 13 carried by arms 12 pivoted to the bar 3 engages the teeth of the bar 5, which is guided on the bar 3 by pins 16. The teeth of the jaws having been engaged with the cut edges 2a of the bale, and the pin 11 inserted in the teeth 4, downward pressure on the lever forces the jaws together and the pawl 13 prevents them from moving apart. A pivoted clip 15 may hold the end of the lever 8 when desired.
