151,833. Tomlinson, H. Oct. 23, 1919. Steering and balancing.-A control apparatus for aeroplanes, seaplanes, and flying-boats is provided with means whereby the control stick may be put out of action and the whole control taken over by the feet. The joystick A is pivoted at E to a rotatably-mounted longitudinal tube D, and the rudder-bar F is movable fore-and-aft about pins F by means of pedals P. These pedals are mounted on a spindle Q rotatable within the bar F and fitted with a disk V which engages a slot in a lever R connected to a pin S sliding through a spindle T. This spindle T carries a lever U connected to a link K, which is further attached to a lever N carrying a pin O. When the control stick is in use, the link K occupies the position K1 indicated in broken lines and the pin 0 is raised. When it is desired to put all the controls into gear with the pedals I', the link K is raised and engaged with catches L on the control stick, thus lowering the pin 0 so as to couple the tube D to a sleeve M which carries the pivot pins G. Movement of the pedals up and down in slotted guides H then rotates the sleeve M and tube D and operates the ailerons, and movement of the pedals so as to rotate the spindle Q on its own axis actuates the levers R, U and, through the link K, adjusts the elevators. The control stick A may be detached from the socket B by releasing a spring catch C.
