Multiple-chamber kilns. -In a down-draught kiln for bricks, tiles, &c., in which the firing arrangements comprise one or more fuel receptacles 5 operated as producers, part of the air supply being delivered for primary combustion through openings 7, 8, and part being conducted past the receptacles through channels 9 for secondary combustion, baffles 13 are arranged to deflect the secondary air over the fuel receptacle. Removable blocks 12 are fitted in the bay walls to facilitate access to the fire-places when repairs are necessary, and the usual over. head passages 11 for the supply of fuel are provided. When the primary air supply openings 7, 8 become choked with clinker &c. the producers act as retorts.
