Vehicle windows, opening and closing. - The window 2 is raised pneumatically by two pistons 5 working in cylinders 6 supplied with air under pressure from a tank 15 through a pipe 16 and valve 14. To lower the window the cylinders are put into communication with the outer air by the pipes 12, 17, and a movement of the valve, Fig. 6, to register the port 14b with the outlets 17a and 12a. In the neutral positions of the valve shown in Fig. 6 the window remains stationary. The valve is operated by hand and is held in one of its three positions by a spring bolt, &c., engaging one of the recesses 19, 20, 21. When applied to a vehicle door, the tubes are cut at the axis of the hinge and the ends joined to swivelling sockets 23 pivoting on pins 24. The piston consists of leather packing 29 between the discs 28 and a cylindrical body, Fig. 7, an annular space being provided which is filled with oil. The oil pressure is adjusted by a screw 30. A single tank may be used to operate all the windows of a car.
