159,526. Mudd, W. G. Aug. 28, 1919. Delivery apparatus of the kind in which the printed sheets are taken from the impression .cylinder of a Wharfedale, or like, cylinder machine by rotary grippers and transferred to grippers on endless chains by a reciprocating appliance consisting of a transverse rod as m and attached tapes passing beneath the sheet when raised by the gripper, is constructed in such a manner that the tail of the sheets overhangs the rod m, so that the grippers 11, on the endless delivery chains 15 pass successively under the supporting tapes or apron t, seize the sheet by its overhanging end, and carry it over a guard 21 and deposit it on a table 22. The grippers, which take the sheet from the grippers of the impression cylinder, are carried by arms on a shaft g geared to the impression cylinder; freely mounted on the shaft g is a pinion u which is oscillated by a rack y and cam-and-lever mechanism from a shaft of the printing-machine. The pinion u by means of a chain drive w oscillates a shaft p, around which pass the chains n to which the rod m is attached. The chains also pass round a tubular shaft q, to which the ends of the tapes or apron t are attached, this tube q being mounted on a solid shaft r. The chains 15 also pass around sprocket-wheels 16 on the shaft q and are fitted with four sets of grippers at 11, 12, 13, 14. The rod m is moved by the chains n from the position shown at the right on Fig. 1 to the position on the left, in which position it supports the sheet until the grippers 11 take it.
