Turning.-Spherical surfaces are machined in an ordinary lathe by an attachment whereby a tool is caused to rotate about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the machine. A casing 2 is mounted in the slide rest and carries a spindle 1 which is adjustable in a cone-bearing by nuts 4. 5 and is hand-driven through worm gearing 6. The coned portion of the spindle is provided with transverse guides 12 in which a slide 13 carrying the tool A is first adjusted by the screw and nut 19 and then locked by the screws 23 abutting against the liner 24, Fig. 2. The eccentricity of the tool is indicated by a pointer 21.
