178,035. Fairweather, W. C., (Underwood Typewriter Co.). June 25, 1921. Platen-shift mechanism; shift-key actions.-A member for locking the shift frame in the upper or lower position is connected to the shift frame by an interponent which is adjustable from the outside without tipping the machine. As shown, the locking-member consists of a lever 62 formed with a notch 64 for engaging a pin 65 on an interponent 66 which is pivoted at 68 to one of the brackets 24 carrying the shift-rail 22. The interponent is adjusted by means of a screw 72, having the head 73 arranged in an arcuate slot 74 in the bracket, and is secured by a screw 69 passing through an arcuate slot 70 in the interponent. The screws 74, 69 are accessible from the rear and side of the machine respectively. The rock-shaft 28 supporting the brackets 24 consists of a rectangular bar trunnioned on pins, and formed with tapering, rectangular or oval ends which enter necks on the brackets and are secured by soldering or the like,- securing-pins being dispensed with. Keys-locks.-The shift-key lever 31 can be actuated by a non-locking key 33 integral therewith, or by a locking-key 57 formed on a lever 39 which is pivoted on the lever 31 and is provided with a pin 53 co-operating with a latch 55 in the following manner. The lever 39 is normally held' in the raised position by a spring 49 and on depressing the non-locking key the pin 53 rides on a cam-face 54 on the latch; when the locking-key is depressed, the pin rides off the cam face and is caught by the latch. The latch is secured to a shaft 56 which can be rocked by a release key. The initial movement of the lever 39 may be limited .by a screw 51 passing through a slot 52. The spring 49 engages a flat 50 on the lever 39, and is formed on a bow 46, abutting on the keylever 31 and formed with a radial finger which is apertured to receive the pivot screw 42 of the lever 39 and is secured by a nut.
