172,723. Marino, Q. Sept. 11, 1920. Gilding, silvering, or platinizing.-A process for metallizing articles of pottery and glass consists in removing the glaze, if any, or roughening the surface by chemical or mechanical means, forming a silver coating by a chemical process, and finally plating with a metal or alloy by electrolysis. The silvering process consists in applying a solution of silver nitrate in alcohol, or alcohol and ether, allowing the solvent to evaporate, applying a solution of formic acid or of formate of sodium, potassium, or ammonium, brushing the surface with a fine wire brush, dipping the article in a warm solution of cyanide of silver, and washing in cold water.
