174,152. Mackenzie, H. W. Oct 14, 1920. Engraving.-The invention relates to apparatus for manipulating distributing nozzles of extrusion apparatus or engraving cutters, of the kind comprising a movable member mounted to move in a plane so that any straight line in the member parallel to the plate remains approximately parallel to its original position, and consists in means for imparting to the movable member movements of an arbitrary character, determined by guides or by the operation of directing mechanism. The apparatus is adapted for use in distributing material as for making cakes, biscuits, &c. or applying decorative coatings to formed articles, and, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises a series of distributing nozzles G of an extrusion apparatus adapted to be operated and then traversed laterally for subsequent operations. Rotating cutters for engraving &c. could similarly be mounted, either fixed above a movable table or as part of a carrier to which motion is applied as described, the articles to be operated upon being placed on a fixed or movable bed. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a table A is mounted to move on a guide rod 1 fixed at right-angles to guides 2 sliding in brackets. Movements, as referred to above, are imparted to the table by means of a rocking arm B which passes through a spherical bearing C, adjustable vertically by a lever 3, and engages in a socket 4 on the underside of the table. Motion is imparted to the outer end of the arm B by the mechanism shown in Fig. 5, comprising a pair of lobe gear wheels E, F each formed with a pair of recesses in which the end of the arm can be placed. The wheel E turns with a gear wheel 8 on the underside of a wheel D which is driven from a power-driven pinion 5, the motion of the wheel 8 being derived through a train of spur wheels. The wheel E drives the wheel F. In the construction shown in Fig. 8, the table A rests simply upon a bed H, movements being communicated to it by a pair of arms B to which corresponding rocking movements are imparted. Two independent power drives are indicated, but one wheel D may be power driven and the other driven from it by a connection. The lobe wheels E may be similarly driven. Fig. 11 shows a stationary diagramguide K along which the arm B is moved by a power-driven wheel K1 formed with a radial slot through which the arm B passes. Fig. 15 shows the arm B supported in a gimbal bearing. Coaxial with one of the supporting axes is a driving pinion L gearing with a toothed wheel N with which the arm is connected to rotate whilst being free to move endwise therein. The arm B is shown provided with a pinion R engaging with a rack T and is constrained to move along a guide. According to the Provisional Specification, the movable member may be moved by hand, either quite freely or in accordance with a diagram.
