185,022. Constantinesco, G. Aug. 31, 1921. Variable-speed gearing rendered automatic by the action of an oscillating mass is specially adapted for use with internal-combustion engines upon locomotives. The mass 12, Fig. 1. is carried at one end of a lever 11, the other end of which may be connected directly to a crank 2 upon the engine shaft 1. An intermediate point on the lever is connected by links 8, 9 to ratchets in opposite phase driving a rotor 10 continuously in one direction. An increased load may result in increased engine speed. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the pendulum lever 5 has a fixed pivot 7 and a second lever 4 is connected to it and to the engine crank 2 and to the ratchet links 8, 9. In a constructional form shown in Fig. 15, the mass is the rim 60 of a fly-wheel oscillating about a fixed pivot 40. The lever 42 pivoted eccentrically at 43 upon the flywheel is connected at one end to the driving- crank 41 and at the other to the ratchetoperating rods 45, 46. One ratchet is shown in section. The rotor 57 is connected by stub links 52, 53 to pads 50, 51, which grip in one direction the inside surface of a drum 47 oscillated by the rod 45. In a further form shown in Fig. 19, the driving connecting-rod 83 oscillates a beam 84 pivoted upon a bell-crank lever 97 carrying the mass 98. The two driven rods 85 act through annular grips 69, 70 applied by rings of skew rods 91, 92. A ratchet grip used in a further form is shown in Fig. 10. The gripping segments r, s are pivoted out of line upon rings p, q, which are oscillated.
