Improvements in packing box packings for rotary compressors used in refrigerating and other plants

Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; with packing- device acting when apparatus is at rest.-Leakage of fluid from the rotary compressor of a refrigerating plant &c. when at rest is prevented by compressible packing, the pressure on which is relieved when the apparatus is rotating. In one arrangement a screw cap on the end of an ordinary packing-box is rotated by a handlever to compress packing between the cap and the end of the box and a collar on the shaft. The packing during running is effected by a labyrinth device 1 supplied with fluid by a passage 2. While the apparatus is stationary, compressible packing 5 is acted on by a gland 6 pressed by a spring 13. When the apparatus is rotating the gland is withdrawn by centrifugal weights 11, connected by links 12 to a collar 8 on the shaft and a ring 7 surrounding the gland 6. In a modification, Fig. 3, when the apparatus is at rest a collar 28 on the shaft is pressed against a packing 27 carried by the packing-box by the axial thrust of the fluid in the compressor 23. When the apparatus is running the pressure on the packing 27 is relieved, the thrust of the fluid in the compressor being balanced by the pressure of lubricant admitted by passages 31 to the thrust bearing 29.
