190,800. Thurston, A. P., and Bristol Aeroplane Co., Ltd. Sept. 28, 1921. Addition to 180,359. Submarine vessels, special apparatus for steering.- A plane or aerofoil for submarines, &c. comprises a series of rigid pinions 11 arranged parallel to one another in substantially the same plane with gaps between them, in combination with a second series of pinions 14 mounted in the gaps and movable lengthwise to extend beyond the ends of the fixed series of pinions to vary the lift of the plane and effect the lateral control of the craft. The fixed pinions 11 may be arranged on a straight line, or, as shown, upon a cambered curve conforming to the shape of the main plane 10. They are of aerofoil section and are preferably set at angles of incidence increasing from front to back, the section and angle being selected to give the highest lift at the maximum convenient landing angle. The movable pinions 14 are similarly arranged and are secured to a hollow member 15 which slides over the fixed pinions 11. The ends of the pinions 11 are braced by a hollow member 13 through which the pinions 14 slide. A member 16, shaped to form a closure for the member 13 when the pinions 14 are retracted, braces together the ends of the pinions 14. The member 15 may have rollers 17 running on strips 18 inserted in the front and rear pinions, and the member 13 may have similar rollers 19 running on strips 20 in the pinions 14. The pinions 14 are extended and retracted by cords 22 passed over pulleys 23 and secured at 24 to the member 15. The cords 22 may be operated for example by mechanism described in the parent Specification to enable the pinions 14 to be simultaneously extended or retracted on the two sides of the machine and adjusted in opposite directions by the coxswains usual control lever to preserve the lateral balance. The main plane 10 may be composed wholly of pinions 11.
