194,342. Bailey, R. W., Morgan, H. E., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Oct. 11, 1921. Corrosion, preventing.-Apparatus for treating boiler feed-water of the kind in which the water is brought into contact with material which reacts with the corrosive substances in the water and is then passed through a filter, is provided with means for maintaining automatically the supply of water to the boiler when the anticorrosive material or the filter is choked. The water is brought into contact with the anticorrosive material at the saturation temperature of the steam generated in the boiler. The water may be heated before and during treatment by mixing with steam which has been treated to render it non-corrosive in the manner described in Specification 177,234. Feed-water is sprayed through a perforated pipe 26, Fig. 1, into a vertical drum 17 mounted upon the boiler and containing anti-corrosive material 18, such as iron or other metal turnings, or expanded metal sheets, which rest upon a perforated plate 25. A filter 27 is placed beneath the material. A partition 28 is formed with an inclined flange having an opening 29 at a level between the boiler steam inlet port 23 and the water outlet. port 21. When the material or the filter is choked, the heated water passes through the opening 29 directly into the boiler supply pipe 66. In modifications, the space between the material and the filter is placed in communication with the top of the water space divided off by the partition, thus allowing water to pass through the material to the boiler when the filter only is choked. The partition may be a cylinder with upper and lower perforated flanges, the filter being then placed between the partition and the sides of the drum. In further modifications, a horizontal drum is used. A horizontal drum 17, Fig. 4, has central vertical partitions 36, 37 extending downwardly between the treatment material 18 and the filter 19 to within a short distance of the bottom of the drum. If the filter only is choked, water from the material rises between the partitions and passes through an opening 42 in the partition 36 directly to outlet part 21. If the material only is choked. water passes through an opening 43 in the partition 37 to the space between the partitions and then upwards through the filter. The anti-corrosive material consists of spaced rectangular iron plates. The filtering substance is held in a trough 45 supported upon longitudinal flanges on the drum. In place of the partitions 36, 37, the drum may be formed with a chamber 51, Fig. 5, connected by a pipe 53 to a receptacle 54 into which feed-water is sprayed through a pipe 26. A partition 36 extends upwards into the chamber. The filtering substance is held in three separate troughs. The anti-corrosive material may consist of circular plates, or of turnings or sheets held in a circular perforated container, the plates or the container being mounted on a central shaft which may be rotated. Square plates may be mounted in a frame which may be oscillated. Water is heated before and during treatment in a chamber A, Fig. 16, by steam which has been treated in a chamber B in the manner described in Specification 197,234, and the steam in the chamber B is maintained in a wet condition by water which has been treated in the chamber A.
