Apparatus for the regular and certain firing of top-fired continuous and chamber kilns for clayware, by mechanical means

Charging.-In apparatus for supplying fuel to top-fired continuous kilns of the type described in Specification 181,090, the discs B are driven by bevel gearing b4, b5 contained in a chamber isolated from the conveyer chambers D, which are of D-shaped section, open at the top, and provided with removable covers d1, d2. The conveyers C are built up in sections, which abut against and overlap one another, the sections being retained on the shafts c by set-screws c‹ in the end sections. The casings D have lugs d3 which pass through holes in the hangers E, pins being inserted in the holes d4. The discs B are secured to stud-shafts b1 by cotters b, the shafts b1 being journaled in the hopper-supporting tray a1, which is provided with felt washers b2 on which the discs B rest, access of coal dust to the bearings being thereby prevented. Lubricators b2 are provided. Deflectors a2 in the hopper A minimize of the weight of the fuel supported by the discs B, the holes b6 in which are countersunk on the undersides to prevent adhesion of the fuel. The holes b10 in the casing D are similarly countersunk, and the feed-regulating slides b8 are retained in definite positions by pawls b12 which engage notches on the slides. The conveyers discharge into chambers F through sockets d5, the chambers F being each formed with two branch pipes which are controlled by pivoted flaps f5 set by handles f6 and locked by nuts f7. Detachable pipes f2 communicate with pipes which enter the hand feed-holes f4 at the sides. Iron or glass lids may remain on the feed-holes f4. An inspection aperture d for the gear chamber is provided.
