Compasses and dividers, ½f the type in which the legs are separated by a spring and closed by a screw, have the adjusting- means so formed as to prcvide an indicator or gauge for determining a measured opening of the legs. The adjusting-nut g, which bears on the cylindrical part k of a stump f engaging the legs, is formed with a conical part h bearing graduation marks j which are read against an index l on the part k. The lower part of the bolt e is marked with graduations p coacting with a finger o on the stirrup to indicate complete turns of the nut.
