Improvements in apparatus for defibrating cotton seed, the decorticated hulls of cotton seed or other fibre bearing seeds, and for segregating and collecting the detached fibres
209,470. Segundo, E. C. de. Oct. 7, 1922. Removing fibre from cotton and like seeds. - In apparatus for defibrating cotton seeds and the decorticated hulls of cotton and other fibre bearing seeds, for collecting the detached fibres, and for separating the dust &c. of the kind described in Specifications 114,435 and 114,450, two superposed series of revolving beaters are provided, the upper one revolving in a conical portion of the defibrating-chamber and the lower one in another portion of the defibrating-chamber, which may be cylindrical or reversely coned or partly cylindrical and partly conical. The two series are separate and can be independently adjusted to vary the clearance between the beaters and the chamber wall. The wall 1 of the chamber is conical and provided with projections 4. The beaters 9 are mounted on a cylinder 5 carried by a boss 6 keyed to a shaft 8 and adjustable along it. Alternatively the wall 1 of the chamber may be adjusted relatively to the beaters, which may comprise roughened metal pieces 11, Fig. 3, held by lugs 12 in holders 10 at the end of arms 9, and may be formed with two parts inclined to one another. The cylinder 5 is closed at the top by a cap 13 provided with adjustable inclined vanes 14. The shaft 8 carries a second boss 16 furnished with beaters 33 and separated from the boss 6 by an exchangeable distance piece 2. In the lower part 29 of the chamber is a bevelled ring 31 which can be adjusted relatively to the 'beaters 33 by handles 32 projecting through inclined slots in the wall of the chamber. The chamber 29 may be conical and the boss 16 adjusted along the shaft 8 to vary the clearance. The chamber 29 is provided at the bottom with an annular ring 18 and arms 19, 20 carried by the boss 16 sweep the seeds out of holes 21. The material may be fed in through a central pipe 25, and the air draught carries the. fibres upwards into the annular chamber 24 round it. The dust passes outwards through grids 26 into a chamber 27. The fibres are deflected downwards by a hood carried by the tube 25, or the top of the chamber 24 is closed by a spiral strip 241 and the fibres issue through an opening 242. The material may be fed in peripherally.
