Charging.-In a lime kiln to which air is admitted both through a central cone 5, and through peripheral openings 1, and in which the gas offtakes 9 are formed in the walls, the charging is so effected that the finer portions of the charge collect in an annular column between a central core and an outer column of the larger portions. In the kiln shown the diameter of the shaft is suddenly decreased above the offtakes 9, and the charging is effected bv tip-buckets 7 running on a circular track on the kiln top. The charge is thus dumped as a circle of smaller diameter than that of the kiln mouth, and the larger pieces roll both inwards and outwards to form the central and outer columns. The cone 5 is formed with downwardly directed perforations 6 and is mounted above a chamber 4 having a conical base 10. Air passages to the chamber 4 are formed by angle irons charge. supports 2.
