Back struts; skid; actuated or applied by speed regulators.-A brake for a colliery tub, truck, &c. adapted to act for either direction of movement of the truck comprises arms D1 pivoted at B and acting as back-struts or skids according to the direction of movement, these arms having transverse bars D2, shown in under plan in Fig. II, which are held up in the dotted line position of Fig. I by latches E having a pin-and-slot connection with a spring-controlled plate F. A centrifugal control N comprises an arm 0 pivoted at O1 to the axle C1 and opposed by a spring P. When the speed of the truck reaches a predetermined limit this arm flies out radially adjacent the spring and knocks to right or left a lug K1, Fig. II, on a slide K so that one or other inclined edge on this slide coacts with a pin J on the plate F to move the latter downwards, Fig. II, and withdraw the latches E towards each other and so release the arms D1.
