232,108. Cussons, G. W., Johnson, A. W., and Cussons, Ltd., G. Sept. 18, 1924. Gravity, measurinr force of.-In apparatus for investigating the laws governing the motion of falling bodies and of the kind ir which a record is made on a strip of paper moved by the falling body, the marking device is mounted on a spring which is inclined to the horizontal plane through the axis of the frictionless wheel around which the paper strip passes : the strip is secured at both ends to the weight sc as to obtain an even pull. In the form shown, the apparatus is carried on a plate 8 having an upwards extension 9, to the upper end of which is secured one end of the inclined spring 11, the marker 12 being carried in an extension 15 from the lower end of the spring. The spring is normally held in a slightly deflected position by a catch 17 mounted on a vertical spindle 18 carrying a handle 19 by which the spindle can be turned to release the spring. The spindle 18 also carries a catch 21a supporting the weight-releasing table 21, this catch being moved to allow the weight 14 to fall when the handle 19 is turned. The paper strip 13 passing over the frictionless wheel 10 is connected at both ends to the weight or weights, which are for this purpose provided with diametrical holes 23 containing rods 24 over which the looped end of the paper can be slipped. An adjustable weight may be mounted on the spring to increase the energy of its vibrations. For steadying the rotation of the wheel 10 its spindle may be extended to receive additional wheels of varying mass. In a modification the vibrations of the spring are effected by an electromagnet.
