Magnetic separators.- In a magnetic separating drum, roller, or pulley for use with conveyers for transporting goods in bulk, the strength of the magnetic field decreases from the centre of the band towards its edges. Enclosed between the pole discs 1, Fig. 1, mounted on a core 2 are coils 3, 4, the coil 3 having more windings or being excited by a stronger current., than the coils 4. The gaps between the poles may be of the same width, or the gap between the poles 1 enclosing the coil 3 may be wider than the others. In a second form, six pole discs are mounted on the core, the gap between the central poles being wider than the gaps between the next pair of poles, the gap between the latter being wider than the outermost gap. The two outer pole discs on each side are adjustable. In a third form, Fig. 3, on one end of the core 2 are cast eight arms 6, a corresponding spider 7 being mounted on the other end. To these arms are secured bars 9, Fig. 5, wider at the centre than the ends so that the width of the gaps increases from the centre to the edges of the drum. The drum may be enclosed in a casing 10.
