Process for extraction of the active biological principles from the ether extract of male fern

Medicines for internal use.-The active biological principles are obtained from the ether extract of male fern by mixing the extract with magnesium oxide, adding distilled water, and, after allowing to stand for some hours, filtering and adding dilute hydrochloric acid to the filtrate to precipitate a mixture of active substances. The substance so obtained is washed and dried, treated with a mixture of ether and carbon tetrachloride, allowed to stand for some days, filtered, and the residue (filicic acid) washed and dried. The filtrate is desiccated to yield aspidinol.
