Mules. - In order to secure the desirable slip in the motor at the commencement of the outward run, the mule is driven by a three-phase series commutator motor with an intermediate transformer, the transformer saturation being such that the drop in speed from noload to full-load is not greater than 30 per cent. The arrangement may be such that the speed load curve is approximately symmetrical above and below the synchronous speed line n8, Fig. 1, or so that the motor runs hypersynchronously at no-load and synchronously at full-load as shown in Fig. 2.
