Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-A fitting to be applied to the hollow journal of a rubber mixing- roll, warmer, &c., to facilitate the supply thereto and passage therefrom of fluids, comprises a sleeve a having a flange a1 for attachment to the journal and a flange a2 co-operating with the flat face d2 of a washer d having a part-spherical face d' with which engages the face e1 of a casting e, the latter being held resiliently against the washer by bolts c and spiral springs @e1 housed in recesses in a split-bearing b for the sleeve a. A tube f is screwed into the casting e and steam or water passed into the interior of the mixing- roll &c. by way of the passage e4 and pipe f escapes by way of the annular space f1 and passage e5. The bearing b and casting e are provided respectively with lubricating cavities b2, e3 and a passage e6 leads from the cavity e3 to and through the washer d. A removable end plug may be provided in the casing e to permit easy access to the pipe f for cleaning purposes.
