Testing strength of submarine boats.-A horizontally-hinged gate for closing the entrance to cylinders for testing submarine boats is formed as a curved shell 1 conforming in curvature to the passage to be closed, so that in the open position it lies in contact with the inner surface of the passage, its projection perpendicular to the axis of the passage conforming to the inner outline of the passage so that on being turned into the upright position it completely closes the passage. When closed the convex surface of the gate is directed towards the direction of highest pressure. The gate, which may be made buoyant, is hinged at 3 and raised and lowered by means of a cable 6.
