270,027. Danek, J. Feb. 16, 1926. Rod and bar feeds; blanks; transferring. - In feeding mechanism for use in forming, blanking and drawing-presses of the kind wherein each of a pair of jaws is caused to follow a D-shaped path, the jaws moving together along the straight part of the path for deeding and separating for idle movement along the curved part, the jaws are operated by one or more pins moving in a circular path so that movement along one half of the circle causes the straight motion and movement along the other half the curved motion. When one pin only is used, it is connected with one jaw and the other jaw is operated from the first by pantograph lir.kage. When two pins are used, each pin 7 is mounted on a crank disc 8 and engages a block 6 slidable in a tube 3, slotted at 12 to allow movement of the pin during one half revolution and attached to a jaw 1. Each tube 3 is slidable in a casing 4 which can slide along a guide 5. The jaws are normally retained in the closed position by springs 15 attached at 16 to some fixed part of the mechanism and at 14 to a stop 13, which during one half of the revolution of the pin 7 is engaged by the block 6 so as to open the jaws and give them their curved motion. Both discs 8 are driven simul. taneously by skew gearing from a common driving shaft 11. The mechanism described is stated to be particularly applicable for handling circular articles such as press caps and other metal closures for bottles, jars and other containers, the jaws 1 being provided with semi-circular opposed depressions 2, 2a and 2b, so that during a feeding movement a blank is moved from the position 2 to 2a where the forming die (not shown) is situated, and simultaneously a finished blank is moved from 2a to 2b. Any known means may be used for supplying blanks to the feeding mechanism. The Provisional Specification states that dash pots may be used in conjunction with the springs 15 to produce a cushioning effect on the jaws when operating at high speeds.
