Decorticating sisal &c.-A machine for separating the fibres from the pulp of sisal or like leaves comprises one or more pairs of corrugated feeding rolls 1, 11 and a series of pairs 2, 21, 3, 31 of plain or corrugated crushing rolls, the clearance between which is adjustable and decreases towards the discharging end of the machine, and the speed of which is the same throughout. The rolls are mounted in the frame 7 and screws 8 are provided to adjust the bearings 6 of the upper rolls. The leaves are fed in singly or abreast by a conveyer 18. Guides 22 separate the leaves, and the juice falls away through perforated guide plates 19, which act as doctors for the lower rolls. Adjustable doctors 25 are provided for the upper rolls. The pairs of rolls are geared together and are driven from a gear 14 through gears 11, 12. When more than one pair of corrugated feeding rolls are employed the pitch of the corrugations of the first pair is coarser than that of the second pair. The machine may be mounted on a stationary or portable chassis in conjunction with a power unit.
