Circulating or passing fluids through materials. -A process and apparatus for scalding or dyeing cotton in bundles comprises a battery of digesters 1 each of which is connected to vacuum, low pressure water and discharge at 9, 11 and 6 respectively, and to mains 5, 14 connected to a four-way valve 17, the other passages 18, 21 of which connect with the liquid container 19, directly and through a pump respectively. The bundle of cotton is drawn into one of the digestors by suction, the digester is closed and exhausted, liquid is circulated in alternately reversed directions and the bundle is discharged by being allowed to float out of the digester on an upward current of low-pressure water.
