Samples of 100% cotton interlock fabric were dyed with a CI Reactive Black 5 mix and subjected to a variety of different rinsing procedures. Rinsing procedures included a traditional rinsing process, as well as rinse procedures with varying use of Dye Transfer Inhibitor (DTI) polymers, acetic acid, and temperatures. The number of rinses was also varied. The dyed and rinsed samples were read into a spectrophotometer and then tested for colorfastness by a variety of methods. From the colorimetric information, the K/S sum of the dyed and rinsed fabric was determined, and the amount of dye remaining after rinsing was estimated. Encouraging results were found that suggest in certain rinsing processes, the use of DTI polymers allows CI Reactive Black 5 to be rinsed with fewer rinses and lower temperatures than a conventional soaping process.
