Coating ropes and cables.-The cable as it is wound on, or paid out from, a winding drum is oiled by means of a roller which rides on the coils on the drum and transfers lubricant thereto. In the construction shown, a pair of upright arms c and a cross-piece e are mounted on a winch frame supporting a winding drum b. An arm g depending from the cross-piece carries a roller l which is pressed by gravity against the coils of a cable being wound on the drum. Oil from a tank m is supplied to the roller by way of a flexible pipe n and a fixed pipe p with a perforated part p1. The arm g, which is in two parts adjujstable with respect to each other, is hooked to a wheeled carriage r which runs on the cross-piece e. When the cable is to be oiled during unwinding, the arm g is swung to engage the coils at the other side of the drum. The roller l is recessed to receive a length of hemp or other absorbent yarn v wound thereon. In a modification, the roller is of convex form with cylindrical or helical grooves. Two oiling rollers side by side may be employed. The invention is especially applicable to the treatment of warps by which a trawl net is hauled in or paid out on a fishing boat.
