298,690. Turner, D. E. March 19, 1928. Movable-abutment type; packing drums and abutments; working-fluid supply; cooling parts. -A rotary engine, pump, or the like comprises one or more cylindrical chambers in each of which is an eccentric cylindrical rotor fixed on a central shaft and connected with one or more cylindrical abutments, of larger diameter than the width of the chamber, which slide in radial housings extending from the chamber to divide each chamber into a number of compartments each having inlet and exhaust valves. Figs. 2 and 5 show an internal combustion engine with two rotors 2, 3 arranged at 180‹, each rotor having connected therewith three cylindrical abutments 15, 17 of a diameter greater than the width of the casing. Each rotor 2, 3 is surrounded by rings 4 - - 7 of which the rings 5, 6 are of less width to provide spaces 43, 44 to receive shoes 42 which hold the abutments 15 - - 17 to the rotor. Bevelled rings 8, 9, 10 surround the ring 7 and are pressed laterally to give fluid tightness by rocking shoes 32 on the abutments which are resiliently held down on the rings 8 - - 10 by means of springs 41 which press on caps 40 abutting on lugs formed on links 38, 39 that carry the constraining shoes 42 for connecting the abutments with the rotor. Air inlet valves 47 are fitted to the abutment housings. The rocking bearing shoes may be grooved to reduce friction and to retain lubricant. The abutments may also be grooved as shown in Fig. 17 which shows a modification wherein the connecting means is a leaf spring 121 with projections 123 or rollers fitting the spaces 43, 44 of the rotor ring system. Fig. 16 shows an alternative form of outer ring 7 which is grooved on its inner and outer peripheries to give resiliency. The inlet and exhaust valves 54, 55 are operated by rocker arms 75 which have a screw adjustment 78 and tappet rods actuated by cams 68, 72 geared to the main shaft. The shaft is supported in bearings 85 housed in cylindrical blocks 87, 88 bolted to the main casing which form the side walls of the chambers and which are hollow and connected with hollow spaces 95, 96 in the casing to provide a water circulating system. The casing has end covers 70, 71; the latter is formed with an annular chamber 108 connected with the inlet pipe and communicating with the inlet valves 54 of the engine; the exhaust valves 55 deliver to the tubular pipes 114 passing through this annular chamber so that the charge is preheated. An auxiliary shaft 99 is driven through spiral gearing to drive a circulating pump or the ignition distributor. Oil chambers 105 with oil level pipes 106 are formed between the cylindrical blocks 87, 88 and the end covers 70, 71.
