An improved machine for stripping tobacco leaves or removing 'flags' and other adhering leaf from the stalks of tobacco leaves

Tobacco.-For stripping leaves, or removing ' flags ' and other leaf fragments, the leaves or incompletely stripped stalks are passed between feed rolls 26, 26a, preceded and followed by rotary brushes 5, 5a, 21, 21a, the speeds of the preceding and following brushes being respectively lower and higher than that of the feed rolls. From the final rolls the leaves and stalks pass into an inclined shoot open at the upper and lower ends 66, 65 and containing an adjustable baffle plate 67 for stopping the stems which slide out at the lower end of the shoot. The leaf fragments, under the influence of a current of air created by the fans 74, pass over the top of the baffle and out by the end 66. A wire grid 67a projecting from the grid 67 ensures the stoppage of the stems without checking the air-current. The fans 74 are driven by bevel gearing from the trains actuating the feed and brushing rolls. Combs 33 and guide bars 39, 40 are associated with the brushes 5, 5a.
