Improvements in the manufacture and production of water-soluble esters of phthalic acid

Esters of dicarboxylic acids.-Water-soluble esters are obtained by acting on one molecular proportion of a dicarboxylic acid with at least two molecular proportions of an alkylene oxide. The reaction mixture may include a diluent or solvent, or a catalyst such as an alkali metal salt of an organic or hydrohalic acid. According to the examples, (1) ethylene oxide and phthalic acid are heated at 60‹-65‹ C. in an autoclave until the mixture is neutral, whereafter the product is suitably worked up; (2) phthalic acid is suspended in the product of example (1) and ethylene oxide is passed in at 60‹-70‹ C.; (3) the reaction mixture of example (2) is modified by adding a small amount of sodium phthalate or sodium chloride; (4) succinic or tartaric acid and ethylene oxide are heated at 60‹-70‹ C. in an autoclave until the mixture is neutral; (5) tartaric acid is suspended in the product obtained from tartaric acid by example (4) and the suspension is heated to 60‹ C. while ethylene oxide is passed in; further amounts of acid are added when the initial quantity is dissolved; and finally a small addition of sodium chloride is made to hasten the esterification. The second Provisional Specification states that the products may be used as solvents or plasticizing agents for cellulose esters and ethers. Specification 265,233 is referred to.
