304,117. O. K. Tool Co., Inc., (Assignees of Weddell, R. R.). Jan. 14, 1928, [Covention date]. Milling-cutters ; tools and tool-holders. - The inserted teeth of machine tool cutters, whether rotary or non-rotary, are tapered and are held in similar recesses in a body by wedge action, transverse movement of the teeth being prevented by one or more serrations on the teeth and recesses. The serrations are arranged parallel to the direction of taper of the recesses but inclined to both of two angularly disposed cutting edges so that lateral adjustment of a tooth by means of the serrations will give simultaneous individual adjustment to the two cutting edges on the tooth. As applied to a face milling- cutter the body 10 has tapered recesses 12 for the reception of teeth 11 which have cutting edges at 18 and 19. Fig. 4. The recesses are inclined to radii of the body and at an angle d to an axial plane in order to provide cutting rake for both edges. Serrations 15 on the. teeth, of V-shaped or other section, coact with similar serrations on one side of each recess and are arranged at such an angle to the cutting edges that in moving a tooth from one serration to the vent in order to compensate for grinding, the two cutting edges will be moved to the dotted line positions in Fig. 4, thus giving each its correct adjustment according to the amount of wear which it usually receives. The serrations may vary progressively round the cutter in their distances from the axis of the body so that in moving a tooth from one recess to an adjacent. one it may be adjusted by a small portion of the pitch of the serrations. As applied to a side or grooving cutter the teeth 22, Fig. 8, are parallel in the axial direction of the cutter and tapered radially. In moving a tooth axially the cutting edges are adjusted to the dotted line positions shown. The teeth are arranged with their radial edges 221 alternately on opposite sides of the cutter and alternate teeth are inclined in opposite directions to the axis of the cutter. In a non-rotary tool also the tooth has two cutting edges which are adjusted simultaneously with respect to a shank when the tooth is moved from one serration to the next.
