Operating barriers electrically.-In addition to controlling signals on trains, energy supplied from a train to the conductor rails 1, 2 is used to operate level-crossing gates and signals on the track in conjunction therewith. Crossing-gates 31 on both sides of the track-rails are mounted on a single shaft 30 to which two motors 29 are connected by a one.way clutch and a friction clutch so that both gates may be operated by either motor and are held closed so long as the motor is rotated, that is, so long as a train is over the conductor 1 at the crossing. Signals 34, 35 at both sides of the crossing are connected to the conductor 1 preceding the crossing so as to give warning of an approaching train and signals 39 are connected in parallel with the motor to the conductor 1 at the crossing, while other signals 38 are energized only when the gates are closed to road-traffic.
