316,191. Williams, H. R. July 24, 1928, [Convention date]. Lapforming apparatus; carding - engines; openers; feeding carding - engines, openers, &c.-In the production of a bat of paper felt from a sheet or web of wood-pulp the material is broken into constituent fibres by a carding action and is transferred by suction to a forming be the formed felt being then positively engaged and fed forward by means situated at the exit point of the suction zone. The web 1, Fig. 1, of wood-pulp is fed by a belt 3 and roller 4 to a. serrated feed roller 5 and curved guide 6 and presented by them to a carding-roller 7 rotating in a casing 8. Unopened pieces of material are removed from the roller 7 by a roller 12 and are returned down a plate 13 to the belt 3. The carded material is withdrawn by suction from the casing through a duct 15 which becomes narrower and shallower at its discharge end, to accelerate the flow of material to the forming belt 17, Fig. 3. The belt 17 runs over a suction box 16 and below a dome shaped box 19 from which air is withdrawn through a pipe 18. To assist in passing forward the web 30 formed on the belt 17 it passes between rollers 23, 24 at the discharge end of the suction box. The roller 24 is mounted in sliding bearings and held against the belt by a weighted lever 28. A web 33 of paper is passed over a gumming roller 35 and applied to the lower surface of the formed web, being pressed against it by a roller 39 cooperating with the guide roller 22 of the belt 17. Fibres adhering to the belt 17 are removed by a brush 66, withdrawn by a fan 54, and passed along a conduit 68 back to the casing 15, to mingle there with the carded fibres from the roller 7. The upper face of the formed web is sprayed with adhesive from a hood 47 and nozzles 48 and a paper web 57 is applied and pressed against the web 30 by rollers 55, 56.
