Stands for maintaining plates or other receptacles in a horizontal position irrespective of the movements of their supporting surfaces comprise a shallow fluid-tight receptacle 1 the bottom surface 2 of which is of material designed to afford effective frictional contact with the supporting surface whilst the top 4 is made of flexible waterproof material adapted to receive the plate or other object when the receptacle is partially filled with water and so support the plate, in the desired manner. A filling aperture 7 is provided. The receptacles which may be provided with recesses 11 for the reception of cutlery, tumblers, &c., are rectangular or segmental in form. In the latter case, the sectors when assembled form a ring for use on a circular table. Eyelets or other fastening devices are provided.
