337,518. Berkel & Parnall's Slicing Machine Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Thomas, H. Sept. 3, 1929. Cutting slices in succession. - A last slice holder for a slicing-machine has a substance positioning face which is adjustable relatively to the gripping elements so that the thickness of the last slice can be regulated. As shown in Fig. 1, the face plate 10 is movable from the full line position, in which a thick last slice is left, to the dotted line position in which a thin last slice results. The plate 10 is carried by pins 20 slidable in the frame of the holder. Springs 22 tend to move the plate 10 towards the shafts 15 of the gripping prongs which are arranged and operated in known manner. The movement of the plate is effected by a handle 31 on a shaft 24 carrying eccentrics 25 which press against levers 26 interconnected with similar levers, all of which gear against the back of the plate 10 and move it in opposition to the springs 22. To prevent the springs 22 from pushing the mechanism back when the handle 31 is released, the eccentrics 25 engage recesses in the levers 26 which are thereby locked, or alternatively, the eccentrics and the parts of the levers 26 engaged thereby are toothed and interengaged so that the plate 10 is locked in any adjusted position. In a modification, the face plate 10 and a similar back cover plate are flanged and placed together to form a substantially enclosed casing which is slidable on a stationary supporting frame interposed between the face and back plates. The sliding of the casing, and consequently the adjustment of the face plate, is effected by the rotation of a shaft journaled in the frame and having eccentric members which engage members secured to the slidable casing. The prong carrying shafts are journaled in the fixed frame and are operated by a pivoted handle carrying a toothed segment which meshes with a pinion on one of the shafts carrying intermeshing pinions. The back plate of the casing is secured by a pivoted bolt and is easily removalble. In a variation of this construction, the sliding of the casing is effected by eccentrics on a vertical shaft journaled in the fixed frame, engaging and operating toggle levers pivoted between the front and back plates. The front and back plates are removable and means are provided for ensuring that all parts are correctly positioned when the plates are replaced. An interfering device prevents the adjustment of the face plate whilst the substance is gripped by the, prongs. The face plate need not have a continuous surface, but may consist of a number of strips, and the back plate may be dispensed with. Specifications 337,531 and 337,572 are referred to.
