357,436. Coating webs. KALLE & CO., AKT.-GES., 23, Rheinstrasse, Biebrich, Wiesbaden, Germany. Dec. 8, 1930, No. 37007. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1929. [Class 140.] Apparatus for coating webs, particularly for varnishing webs of cellulose hydrate consists of a varnish bath B, Fig. 1, and two wiping battens 1, 2, mounted at a fixed distance apart and overlapping each other, with two short wedges 3, Fig. 2, mounted on the lower batten which cover the edges of the web and are lightly pressed against it. The wedges may be removably mounted on the batten, and may be made of soft elastic material, or may be of metal, in two parts, with a spring between the parts, as shown in Fig. 3. The part bearing against the web is then covered with fabric. The battens are provided with rounded edges. Preferably the web is led around a series of small rollers C placed relatively close together, before entering the varnish bath, to smooth out irregularities. The apparatus enables the edges of webs to be evenly coated.
