In the production of carbon from oil refinery residues, heavy distillates are cracked under low pressure and at high temperature and the resulting gas is added to the gas formed during usual high pressure cracking operations and the mixed gases are burnt with incomplete combustion. According to an example, petroleum residues are cracked at a pressure above 75 pounds per square inch and the residue, after distillation of the valuable constituents, is sprayed on to plates heated above 1000 DEG F. The resulting gas is of a highly unsaturated nature and when burnt in admixture with the gas from the first cracking operation carbon black of high quality is produced.
