Suitability of Carbon Black Produced by the Oil Furnace Process for Use in Rocket Propeliants

Approximately fifty samples of furnace blacks were obtained from six large producers. Analyses were conducted on these samples to establish the range of values of specific characteristics of this material as produced by industry. Several samples were selected for more complete evaluation to cover the ranges of the individual carbon black characteristics found during preliminary work.nThe various furnace and channel blacks were incorporated in solvent M7 and solventless M16 double base rocket propellants to determine whether any deleterious effects were produced in the stability or functional characteristics of these propellants.nThe effects of the specially prepared blacks on M7composition stability were inconclusive.
