An improved paraffin emulsion, method of making the same and use therefor

Aqueous emulsions of paraffin wax are prepared by the use as emulsifying agent of saponified Montan wax. For example 100 lbs. of Montan wax and 300 lbs. of paraffin wax are melted in 900-1000 lbs. of hot water with stirring and 7 lbs. of caustic soda in solution are added with continued stirring. The resulting emulsion is diluted either immediately with 600-700 lbs. of hot water or gradually with sufficient cold water to maintain the original viscosity: alternatively it may be passed through a colloid mill. The paste-like product may be added to paper pulp or fibre in a beater and subsequently precipitated to produce waterproof pulp boards, cardboard or paper, or may first be transformed into a fine storable suspension by the addition of a precipitant such as aluminium or magnesium sulphate.
