Bauxite and in particular the variety known as "Gantite" is heated to temperatures above 600 DEG C. but below the melting point and is ground to powder, and washed or sieved. The powder is mixed with a binding-agent such as water-glass, linseed oil or varnish to form a coating-composition which protects against rust, corrosion, decomposition and heat.
