[Class 83 (iii).] In control mechanisms for lathes as described in Specification 172,217, [Class 83 (iii), Metals, Cutting], in which a number of hand-levers for gear changing are arranged to disengage a main driving clutch before a speed change can be effected, means are provided whereby the main clutch can be disengaged independently of a speed-changing movement. One of the gear-change levers b, Fig. 1, pivoted at h, moves through rack and quadrant i, j a spring-controlled plunger k which depresses a lever a to disengage the clutch by the rotation of the shaft x. Movement of the lever b about the axis of the plunger k effects the gear change. A lever z may also be provided, Fig. 3, carried by the lathe saddle and slidably keyed to a shaft u which runs the length of the bed; rotation of the lever moves a quadrant and rack y, t, cam block r, and link p to disengage the clutch through the lever o.
