389,688. Making steam generators, radiators, &c. COLLET & ENGELHARD WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK AKT.- GES. and SCHARFF, W., 130, Bernardstrasse, Off enbach-on- Main, Germany. June 9, 1932, No. 16336. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii).] Drilling-machines , tapping.-In an automatic machine for machining parts of heating devices, such as radiators, sectional boilers, &c. in large quantities, the work-pieces are carried by a chain conveyer to tools for boring and rough facing the holes therein and then to tools for tapping the holes and finishing the faced surfaces, after which the pieces are carried to a delivery station. After being machined on one face, the work-pieces are returned to the machine for operation on the other faces. The machine comprises a boring and facing head Sr, Fig. 2, arranged above the tapping and finishing head Sl and a chain y having brackets x secured thereto for receiving the work blanks e. The boring spindle o is splined within a driving sleeve m and is fed by a screwed extension p thereon engaging an internal thread on a sleeve n which also has external threads of different pitch engaging internal threads on the sleeve m, the sleeve n being splined within the machine casing to prevent rotation thereof. The boring cutters a and facing cutters b, Figs. 1 and 2, are preferably of hard high-speed steel and are rotated at high speed with a slow rate of feed imparted by the differential screws. The tapping spindle u, which carries a tap c, Figs. 1 and 2, is fed bv a screwed sleeve r and nut s and is surrounded by a splined driving sleeve z which carries the cutters d for finishing the faced surfaces on the blanks. During the first portion of the tapping operation the facing cutter is fed with the tap through a spring t but when a collar v on the sleeve z engages an abutment w, the tap advances alone and the cutter d remains axially stationary to polish the faced surfaces. Work-holders ; work gripping and mounting.- Mounted on slides h, Fig. 2, between the upper and lower tool heads Sr, Sl respectively are frames g, Fig. 3, carrying adjustable abutments l and clamps i for holding the work blanks e during machining. The clamps i are operated by pneumatic cylinders k, which are controlled automatically in timed relation with the conveyer chain y. The frames g are moved laterally after each machining operation to allow the work to be moved on by the chain. Blanks, transferring.-The work-pieces e are placed within the grippers x of the feeding chain y at the upper horizontal portion and are delivered from the machine at the station Ab, the weight of the blanks on the vertical portion of chain adjacent the tools serving to displace the chain.
