366,158. Acid-proofing stones. GROVES, W. W., 30, Southampton Buildings, London.-(I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. ; Frankfort-on-Main, Germany.) Nov. 7, 1930, No. 33553. [Class 140.] Stones which are not acid-proof are treated, for use in the construction or covering of acidproof structures, by coating them, as by dipping in a well-moistened state, with a coarsely dispersed, aqueous bitumen emulsion free from soaps and alkalies. Bitumen emulsions suitable for the purpose are those which do not separate in flakes when mixed with sand or mineral dust, such as emulsions prepared by means of lignic acid, humic acid, insoluble humates, silicic acid and insoluble silicates. The stones so treated are stacked for drying in such a manner that they cannot adhere, e.g. by placing beneath them battens which are powdered with quartz &c. or coated with a pulp of quartz powder. In assembling the dried stones, a cement is used consisting of an emulsion of the kind referred to and an acidproof mineral powder such as sand. In an example, an asphalt emulsion consisting of 4 per cent of brown coal rich in humic acid, 50 of petroleum asphalt softening at 20-30‹ C., and 46 of water, is employed both for coating and making the cement.
