389,114. Tubing-catchers for wells. BYRON JACKSON CO., 2150, East Slauson Avenue, Los Angeles, U.S.A. Aug. 10, 1931, No. 22618. Convention date, April 21. [Class 85.] Means for catching falling-tubing in an oil &c. well comprise a tube or nipple 4 interposed between two sections of the tubing and a head 9 secured thereto as by welding through holes 10 ; wedge grooves 12, forming seats for wedge slips 15, are formed in the head, the walls of the grooves converging upwardly and inwardly so that at the lower parts of the grooves, the surface of the nipple is exposed, the arrangement permitting the use of long slips. The slips have horizontal or inclined teeth and their inner faces are hollowed to clear the nipple ; at the lower parts of the grooves 12, wings 44, Fig. 6, are provided to retain the slips in position. Detachable reins 21 connect the upper ends of the slips to a sleeve 27 pressed upwardly by a spring 30 supported on the head, the weight of the parts normally compressing the spring which, when the tubing falls, is freed from the weight and therefore expands causing the slips to slide in the grooves 12 and grip the well casing. A grooved nut 45 limits movement of the sleeve 27 which has openings 32 for egress of fluid. Tongues 33 project from the lower ends of the slips into groove s 36 within an aperture, skirt 34 depending from the head 9 ; further grooves 38, Fig. 4, are provided between the grooves 36 and are closed at the upper end, each groove 38 being separated from one adjacent groove 36 by a rib 42 with a tapered lower end. An anchor, comprising sleeves 50, 51, Fig. 2, slidable on a nipple 52, and connected by bow springs 53 engaging the well casing, may be used with the device to check lowering of the tubing. Fingers 37 project upwardly from the sleeve 50 and during normal use of the tubing catcher occupy the grooves 38 in the skirt 34. When the tubing has reached the desired position in the casing, it may be locked by raising, turning, and lowering the tubing so that the fingers 37 enter the grooves 36 and engage the tongues 33 on the slips to raise the latter.
