Products stated to have wetting, foaming, dispersing, and cleansing properties are prepared by sulphonating esters and amides having the formul FORM:0390840/IV/1 and R.COOR1 in which RCO is a residue of a halogenated saturated fatty acid containing at least ten carbon atoms and free from hydroxy groups, R1 is a cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicle and R2 a hydroxyalkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radicle, and when R2 is aralkyl or aryl, R1 may also be oxyalkyl. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 s.s. 5 of the Acts as follows: (1) monochlorstearichydroxyethylanilide, monochlorstearic anilide, monochlorstearic benzylamide and monochlorstearic cyclohexylamide are sulphonated in ethylenechloride with chlorsulphonic acid; the acid amides are obtained by treating monochlorstearic chloride with the corresponding amine: 92) dichlorstearic chloride is warmed with cyclohexanol and benzylalcohol and the resulting esters sulphonated in carbon tetrachloride with chlorsulphonic acid. Esters and amides containing bromine and iodine are mentioned.
